Future forecasts for women's participation in sport and exercise

This report completed in conjunction with the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation shows that there is a crisis in women’s participation in sport and exercise. Three out of five women believe that they do enough exercise to be healthy, whereas in reality less than one in five are actually going enough.

Forecasts in participation rates for women in the next ten years show a gloomy picture: one forecast shows a potential fall of 5.5% by 2017. This could amount to 1.25 million fewer women being sufficiently active. Alongside the fact that it is now recognised that the threat from obesity is a potential crisis on the scale of climate change is cause for concern.

This report details an understanding on how women participate in sport and exercise. Our research shows that women do sport different to men, the biggest barrier to women’s participation in sport and exercise is cultural, and often it is down to low body confidence in women today.
